*A recent survey carried out on behalf of Dogs Trust reported that 101,586 stray dogs were found and collected by local authorities in the UK last year, and 7,743 dogs were destroyed for want of a home, in some cases a dog may have suffered injury or ill health. These dogs have either been dumped or have strayed and although every effort is made to locate the owners of lost dogs, no tag or chip means this can sometimes be impossible.
Over 6,000 of these dogs were collected by Yorkshire local authorities in the last year. This is a 17 per cent increase on last years results, an additional 900 dogs. Shockingly it was discovered that the number of dogs put to sleep unnecessarily has grown from 200 to 400 dogs over the course of the year, which is a worrying increase of 106 per cent. **
**All figures are estimates based on an assumption that responding authorities are representative of authorities as a whole. Results relate to the period 31st March 2005 to 1st April 2006. The 2006 survey was produced by GfK NOP who mailed questionnaires to all 432 local authorities in the UK, with a response rate of 64%. Results are weighted to represent the 432 authorities.
